First footing is a traditional way of welcoming in the New Year in Scotland and Northumberland.
Each drawstring bag that old Hamlet sells contains: whisky toddy spices (good cheer), a lump of coal (warmth), Walkers shortbread (food) and a coin (prosperity). All you need to do is add a bottle of malt whisky – personally, I like Bruichladdich or Talisker.
